What would I be doing?

You’ll get to be involved in all aspects of academic librarianship: instruction, reference, collection development, outreach, and scholarly communication. You’ll teach one-shots and be embedded in undergrad classes in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental & Earth Science, Health Science, Mathematics & Computer Science, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology, as well as the graduate Biotechnology program. Plus, you’ll play a critical role in shaping the Library’s role in new undergraduate and graduate nursing programs (enrolling students in fall 2025). You’ll also staff a couple of reference shifts each week (including a weekly 5–7 p.m. shift, and a Saturday or two each semester), select books and other materials to support your disciplines, promote and educate about open-access publishing and open educational resources, and contribute to our outreach efforts to make the library a welcoming place for everyone. It’s a position with a lot of autonomy, and also a lot of peer support.

Where would I be working?

Saint Mary’s is located in the beautiful East Bay hills of the San Francisco Bay Area, a 20-minute drive (or 40-minute BART and bus ride) from Oakland and a 45-minute drive (or 1-hour BART and bus ride) from SF. Saint Mary’s is a private, Catholic, Lasallian college, rooted in the liberal arts tradition, that has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution.

Why should I want to work there?

We’ve got a tight-knit 19-person library team that works collaboratively and transparently toward supporting students, inspiring discovery, and providing access to knowledge. We welcome you to pursue your passions, contribute ideas to improve our services, and get involved in campus life. The science faculty, staff, and students are also wonderful to work with.

Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life/disability insurance, short-term disability, paid family leave, and flexible spending accounts. You’ll start out with 15 vacation days per year (plus 15-18 holidays) and 12 days of sick leave per year.

What are the position details?

Librarians at Saint Mary’s are staff. You will be hired at the assistant librarian, associate librarian, or librarian level depending on your experience, with a corresponding salary of $70,000 – $80,000. Our promotion standards and staff salary scales are available for you to view. This position reports to the Head of Teaching and Research Services.
